JOIN OUR TEEN TEAM OF RESEARCHERS
Dig-in to real scientific research, and make a difference in the community! Our Stella's Teen Research Group currently focuses on promoting dark sky compliant lighting in beachside neighborhoods of southern and central Brevard County; measuring the impact of both ordinances and educational programs on the darkness of the night sky. Applications are accepted from high school teens each semester to fill any open positions on a 15 member team.
Expectations:
Applicants must be 14 to 18 years old and working at high school level in math and science (9th through 12th grade). Team members must be curious, intrinsicly motivated, and able to work well in a team setting.
Roles:
Stella's Teen Researchers work on a variety of projects. They develop protocols for data collection, plan educational events, coordinate with town and county governments, conduct field research, and analyze data. Weekly meetings are held during the day. Data collection and educational presentations are periodically held in the evenings. Teens are empowered to become leaders as they learn to function as a scientific research team.
Benefits:
Teen Researchers fill roles that often are not available to students until college. They gain a deeper understanding of biology concepts, see practical application of statistical analysis, gain public speaking skills, and build an impressive resume. They will enter college or the workforce with true research experience and solid teamwork and communication skills. They also earn community service hours applicable to the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship. And perhaps most importantly, they will know that they made a measurable impact through their outreach.
