Let's Restore Oysters together
The Indian River Lagoon was a habitat for many, many oysters. People used to come far and wide to experience oystering in its waters, and there were even locals who used it as a source of income to provide for their families. Now, that's gone.
Oysters are what scientists call keystone species. This means they are so important and vital to the ecosystems they are in because they have a large impact on its health. The less oysters there are in the Indian River Lagoon, the less healthy the waters will be for both us and the marine species living in it.
We've partnered with Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute and The ZIP Project to allow citizen scientists, like yourself, to help us bring back our oysters. Through oyster restoration projects like this one, we can help improve water quality and clarity, making the waters safer for us and the marine species below. Let's help our Indian River Lagoon thrive!
Join us on the second and fourth Friday of every month from 2-3pm at Hubbs SeaWorld Research Institute to participate in oyster reef monitoring!
Note that this activity will require you to get into the water, so make sure you wear clothes you don't mind getting wet and your water shoes!
